Round 2 - 2010-11 season

Avon begins season with win

Donald tennis players' first hit out for the 2010-2011 season began with mixed fortunes at the Donald Lawn Tennis Courts, with Avon notching a narrow 6-4 win against Wycheproof, and Richardson going down to the perennially strong Nullawil side 0-10.

With Avon and Wycheproof playing six a side, the home team Avon began the day well with Derek Hollis and Stuart Potter winning their set 8-5. Derek continued his early good form with another very solid 8-3 win in conjunction with Tony Goode as did Stuart who combined with Tony to win a tight tie-breaker 8-7. While the top men had completed a clean sweep of their matches the bottom men struggled to repeat the feat. Tom Gillahan and Jeremy  Goode fought hard in their 5-8 loss, while new-comer Levi Borden was very competitive, even though he didn’t manage to quite steal a set from the Wycheproof men.  In the end the Wycheproof men took the two points, by winning the section by the narrowest of margins 37 games to Avon’s 36 games.

Not to be outdone by the Avon top men’s section, the women’s top section also made a clean sweep of their three sets. Jodie Westerland and Rae Ackland had a solid win in their set 8-3 while Jodie and Allison Belleville also won 8-3.  Rae and Allison then combined for the best win of the day winning 8-2. The bottom women also began the day well with Joyce Hollis and Laura Ackland winning their set 8-5. Joyce then combined with grand-daughter Jasmine Hollis, but unfortunately weren’t able to complete their first joint foray in senior tennis with a win, going down 2-8. The Avon women took the two points winning their section by seven games 37- 30, giving the Avon team a 6 game buffer going into the mixed.

Like the men’s earlier in the day, the mixed section was a close fought affair following a similar pattern. The top section again produced a clean sweep of their games. While Stuart Potter and Jodie Westerland had a tight tussle eventually winning 8-6, Derek Hollis and Rae Ackland won comfortably 8-2 as did Allison Belleville 8-3. Levi Borden and Jasmine Hollis were once again very competitive in their losing match going down narrowly 6-8, while the other two sets were both won by Wycheproof 8-2. It was first thought that the scores for the mixed section were tied at 34 each, but after a minor “fracas”, the scores were adjusted 35-34 in favor of Wycheproof, giving them victory.

In the end the final margin for the entire day (and after 18 sets) was a mere six games, with (thanks to the women’s section) Avon taking the day 107 games to 101 games. Avon scored 6 points while Wycheproof scored 4.

Three set winners for Avon were Derek Hollis, Stuart Potter, Tony Goode, Jodie Westerland, Rae Ackland and Allison Belleville.

Richardson, missing their No. 1 player Gary Young, but still able to field a seven a side line-up had a ready replacement for Gary in Anne Campbell who played in the men’s section. She and Brad bath combined for a good 8-3 win over Ken Rotherham and Daniel Watts. Brad continued his good day when he backed up in his second men’s set with Graeme Cocking defeating Ken and Peter Marston 8-5. The only other winners in the men’s section for Richardson were Alexander Bourchier and Jordan Bath who had a tight tussle with Brent and Toby Sheahan finally getting over the line 8-7. Nullawil however were convincing winners in the other four men’s sets and took out the section 47 games to 35.

Meanwhile the very strong Nullawil women’s section was giving their Richardson counterparts a good old tennis lesson. Only Caitlyn Wood and Kendra Campbell were able to come away with a win 8-5, which was a great effort. In other six sets, the highest number of games the Richardson pair was able to score was four. With 0-8 and 1-8 losses in the mix, the Richardson women finally struggled to 23 games for the day, but this was thirty games behind Nullawil’s 53.

The mixed section was a similar story. Anne Campbell and Carmen Bath managed to sneak over the line in their set winning 8-7.  Graeme Cocking won his second set for the day winning 8-5 in combination with Kerry Bormann. Nullawil with wins in five of the seven sets once again took out the section by a fair margin 52-35.

Final scores were Nullawil 10 points (152 games) to Richardson 0 points (93 games. Unfortunately there were no three set winners for Richardson with brad Bath, Graeme Cocking and Anne Campbell coming closest with two.

Don’t forget that all the details of the season are now up on the tennis club website at www.donaldtennis.com.au . ROUND THIRTEEN

Round 13 of the NCTA saw the Donald (Avon and Richardson) and Birchip (Tchum and Ballapur) teams clash for the second time this season, with both Birchip teams ending any finals aspirations Richardson and Avon may have had about making the finals.

It wasn’t all one way in favour of the Birchip teams however with Avon and Richardson both managing to win their men’s sections. Richardson won four of their seven sets winning their section narrowly by 41 games to 38, while Avon managed to win seven of their eight sets, 60 games to 40.

The Richardson women however only managed to win one set from their seven sets played with Joyce Hollis and Laura Ackland winning 8-6. Joyce was unlucky to not win a second set, losing to Louisa Lee and Jenny Goldsmith in a tiebreaker. The Ballapur women had a comfortable section win 46 games to 24. It much the same story for the Avon women against Tchum with Tchum winning all eight sets played. Sarah Tottenham and Allison Belleville offered to the most resistance losing their set in a tiebreaker. The Tchum women had an easy section win 64 games to 30 games.

With both Donald teams behind the eight ball at the start of the mixed, they would need most things to go right in the  mixed section games. For Richardson only Adam Flood and Rae Ackland could claim a win while for Avon Derek Hollis / Sarah Tottenham and Alexander Bourchier / Alex Downes managed wins. Ballapur defeated Richardson in the mixed by 14 games (42-28), while Tchum also had a solid 17 game win (52-35).

Final scores were Ballapur 126 games (8 points) defeated Richardson (2 points) while Tchum 156 games (8 points) defeated Avon 125 games – 2 points)

Three set winners for the day were: Derek Hollis (Avon), Adam Flood (Richardson), B. Gleeson, James Goldsmith, Eileen Smith, Wendy Buteaux, Jenny Goldsmith (Ballapur), Sharee Dobson, Fiona Best, Simone Christie, W. McClelland, D.Donnellon, Mikaela Christie, Shelley Ditterich and Belinda Randall (Tchum)

Results for Week 2

The second round of Twilight Tennis was played last Thursday night in magnificent weather. The banter was flying early in the High School vs McSheridan’s match  on Court 3 with John McConville and Bernie Sheridan taking every opportunity to throw a few quick ones into Tony Cashin on the net, both with tennis balls and some well directed remarks.  Cashy had the last laugh though as he and Stuart Potter finally ground out a well deserved 8-6 victory, although Cashy had to be helped off the court.  On Court 4, Ian Hume was serving up a storm for the High School, as he and Karyn Goode played a hotly contested match with Jake Sheridan and Pam McConville. Once Ian finally got his serving radar on course, he and Karyn managed to score an 8-5 win. In the second set, husband and wife team John and Pam McConville attempted to run the exhausted Tony Cashin around, but some solid work by Karyn Goode on the net meant that the High School won 8-5.

Meanwhile on Courts 5 and 6, the Big Guns, still chuffed over their easy win over the High School the previous week, were determined to continue their winning run in Round 2. Out went Paddy O’Reilly, much to the relief of those without sunglasses, as well as Bernie Sheridan and Grace Brennan who had defected to other teams during the week. In came John Brennan and Bobby Sheridan, as well as Bernard Downes. The whole scale changes from last week made no difference with the Big Guns winning three of their four sets, although with two tie-breakers in that lot, (both involving Bobbie Sheridan!) those serving behind the bar were looking forward to doing some big business at the end of the night. Bragging rights for the week rest with  John and Ange Brennan as daughter Grace found herself playing for the losing opposition.

Meanwhile the Grande Dames having being joined by Rae Ackland during the week, were now at full strength and looking forward to inflicting some serious damage upon their opposition. They came up against the Lowry team. Joyce Hollis and Joan Hardingham used their years of experience in just getting over the line against Carmel Lowry and Steve Harmer 8-7 while Anne Walsh and Rae Ackland defeated Oleg Rachinsky and Will McConville. The Grande Dames, despite running out of steam a little towards the end, managed to scrape a 3 point victory.
