Results for Week 2

The second round of Twilight Tennis was played last Thursday night in magnificent weather. The banter was flying early in the High School vs McSheridan’s match  on Court 3 with John McConville and Bernie Sheridan taking every opportunity to throw a few quick ones into Tony Cashin on the net, both with tennis balls and some well directed remarks.  Cashy had the last laugh though as he and Stuart Potter finally ground out a well deserved 8-6 victory, although Cashy had to be helped off the court.  On Court 4, Ian Hume was serving up a storm for the High School, as he and Karyn Goode played a hotly contested match with Jake Sheridan and Pam McConville. Once Ian finally got his serving radar on course, he and Karyn managed to score an 8-5 win. In the second set, husband and wife team John and Pam McConville attempted to run the exhausted Tony Cashin around, but some solid work by Karyn Goode on the net meant that the High School won 8-5.

Meanwhile on Courts 5 and 6, the Big Guns, still chuffed over their easy win over the High School the previous week, were determined to continue their winning run in Round 2. Out went Paddy O’Reilly, much to the relief of those without sunglasses, as well as Bernie Sheridan and Grace Brennan who had defected to other teams during the week. In came John Brennan and Bobby Sheridan, as well as Bernard Downes. The whole scale changes from last week made no difference with the Big Guns winning three of their four sets, although with two tie-breakers in that lot, (both involving Bobbie Sheridan!) those serving behind the bar were looking forward to doing some big business at the end of the night. Bragging rights for the week rest with  John and Ange Brennan as daughter Grace found herself playing for the losing opposition.

Meanwhile the Grande Dames having being joined by Rae Ackland during the week, were now at full strength and looking forward to inflicting some serious damage upon their opposition. They came up against the Lowry team. Joyce Hollis and Joan Hardingham used their years of experience in just getting over the line against Carmel Lowry and Steve Harmer 8-7 while Anne Walsh and Rae Ackland defeated Oleg Rachinsky and Will McConville. The Grande Dames, despite running out of steam a little towards the end, managed to scrape a 3 point victory.

ROUND THIRTEEN

Round 13 of the NCTA saw the Donald (Avon and Richardson) and Birchip (Tchum and Ballapur) teams clash for the second time this season, with both Birchip teams ending any finals aspirations Richardson and Avon may have had about making the finals.

It wasn’t all one way in favour of the Birchip teams however with Avon and Richardson both managing to win their men’s sections. Richardson won four of their seven sets winning their section narrowly by 41 games to 38, while Avon managed to win seven of their eight sets, 60 games to 40.

The Richardson women however only managed to win one set from their seven sets played with Joyce Hollis and Laura Ackland winning 8-6. Joyce was unlucky to not win a second set, losing to Louisa Lee and Jenny Goldsmith in a tiebreaker. The Ballapur women had a comfortable section win 46 games to 24. It much the same story for the Avon women against Tchum with Tchum winning all eight sets played. Sarah Tottenham and Allison Belleville offered to the most resistance losing their set in a tiebreaker. The Tchum women had an easy section win 64 games to 30 games.

With both Donald teams behind the eight ball at the start of the mixed, they would need most things to go right in the  mixed section games. For Richardson only Adam Flood and Rae Ackland could claim a win while for Avon Derek Hollis / Sarah Tottenham and Alexander Bourchier / Alex Downes managed wins. Ballapur defeated Richardson in the mixed by 14 games (42-28), while Tchum also had a solid 17 game win (52-35).

Final scores were Ballapur 126 games (8 points) defeated Richardson (2 points) while Tchum 156 games (8 points) defeated Avon 125 games – 2 points)

Three set winners for the day were: Derek Hollis (Avon), Adam Flood (Richardson), B. Gleeson, James Goldsmith, Eileen Smith, Wendy Buteaux, Jenny Goldsmith (Ballapur), Sharee Dobson, Fiona Best, Simone Christie, W. McClelland, D.Donnellon, Mikaela Christie, Shelley Ditterich and Belinda Randall (Tchum)
