Round 4 Report

The December Twilight Tennis competition wound up last Thursday night with a very close tussle for the title between the College of Knowledge and A Country Practice. In fact the night resulted in a tie between the two teams at two sets and 20 games each. In the end it was the College of Knowledge that was awarded the title, due to superior percentage.

In other results

  • The Inbetweeners defeated The Young Uns
  • Powderpuffs lost to Katie's Krusaders
  • McSheridans lost to Wallis (and Gromit)

The Tennis Club would like to thank all those who competed over the past four weeks. A lot of fun was had over the four weeks and there was some great tennis seen. It was great to see some non-competition players compete such as Tom and Kathy Walker, Jodi Constable, Lauren Swan, Karyn Goode, Kelvin 'Acky' Adamson, Michelle Hollis, John and Will McConville, Bernie and Alex Sheridan, Tony Cashin and Oleg Rachinsky, as well as any other person that filled in. All of them certainly held their own against regular players. It was also great to see a few Junior Tennis players compete against the adults and some of those tennis regulars will certainly need to lift their game in a a few years to match these rapidly improving young players.

The Tennis Club hopes to see all of the above plus a few more at our next Twilight Tennis competition which at this stage will begin on Thursday 1st March 2012. Watch the paper for details and of course keep checking out our website at www.donaldtennis.com.au

Round 2 Report

Eight teams took the court in the second round of the Twilight Tennis competition last Thursday night.

College of Knowledge (26 games) defeated McSheridans (17 games)
The College of Knowledge / McSheridan matches have always been one of the highlights of the past few Twilight Tennis tournaments and their latest clash was likely to prove no exception. Tony Cashin, after missing last week was back for the College, while the McSheridans looked more settled despite their narrow loss last week. Stuart Potter and Tony took on Bernard Sheridan and John McConville in the first set and took a 5-1 lead, before "Brickie" Sheridan and "Terrier" McConville hit top form and fought back taking the next four games. There was some great tennis played by both sides and the hitting was so intense, that Stuat Potter's racquet wilted under the pressure, snapping the frame and then two strings. However despite this set-back the College was able to close out the set 8-5. In the other opening set Alex Sheridan and Will McConville were defeated by mother and son combination Karyn and Jeremy Goode. However both Sheridans were able to turn the tables in their second set when they combined to defeat Stuart and Jeremy 8-2. Tony Cashin completed a triumphant return to tennis winning his second set with Karyn Goode when they defeated the other father-son combination for the McSheridans, John and Will McConville.

The Inbetweeners (28 games) defeated Wallis (and Gromit) (24 games)
After losses last week, both sides were keen to open their accounts with a win this week. Kathy Walker and Michelle Hollis took on the powerful Steve Harmer and the very consistent Leah Trollop and despite Michelle's confidence before the match, they were defeated 3-8. Alex Downes and Tom Walker combined for the first time against Matthew Berry and Luke Sheather. It appears the greater consistency won out narrowly with Tom and Alex recording an 8-7 win. Steve Harmer and Luke Sheather fought hard in their second set, but husband and wife team Kathy and Tom clearly were the better communicators and were more readily able to adapt their considerable squash skills to the court. Meanwhile in the other set, Matt Berry was substituted for team captain Carmel Lowry - a shrewd move by the captain as she and Leah Trollop went on to defeat Michelle Hollis and Alex Downes 8-5 .

The Powderpuffs (21 games) lost to A Country Practice (26 games)
The pre-competition favorites, "A Country Practice" struggled to name a team together this week due to unforseen work commitments, but fill ins Tony Goode and daughter Eliza Goode was more than worthy replacements. The Powderpuffs' Belinda Murray and Jodi Constabe were a formidable combination themselves, but in their first set they were unable to give opponents Kelvin 'Acky' Adamson and partner Demi enough of the run around, losing their first set 2-8. Carling McEvoy and Stacey Hibbed struck back in their set defeating father-daughter combination Tony and Eliza Goode 8-6. Acky and Tony Goode had a comfortable 8-3 win over Belinda Murray and Carling McEvoy in the second set, while Demi and Eliza fought hard but were no match for experienced twilighters Jodi Constable and Stacey Hibberd.

The Young Uns (15 games) lost to Katie's Krusaders (32 games)
The Young Uns met Katie's Krusaders in the final match of the night. Tom Gillahan and Laura Ackland catapulted their side into a commanding early lead by defeating Josh Potter and Lachie Hollis 8-1. The rapidly improving Aidan Goode and Meg Cashin put up a good struggle against their older and more experienced opponents, but were eventually defeated 6-8 by Tobie Chapman and Katie Gillahan. in the second set Josh Potter and Aidan Goode were comfortably defeated by Tom Gillahan and Tobie Chapman, while laura nad Katie had a good 8-5 win over Lachie Hollis and Meg Cashin their final set.

Round 1 Report

A balmy Thursday night was almost the perfect setting for the opening round of Twilight Tennis and with six teams raring to play, the competition looked set to be intense.

College of Knowledge (30 games) defeated The Inbetweeners (27 games)
The College of Knowledge found itself a bit short of players at the beginning of the game with one of its members still busy at work imparting knowledge, so young Lachie Hollis filled in, finding himself playing alongside his year Level co-ordinator Jenny Leishman. That appeared not to faze him though as he and Jenny opened up an early lead over opponents Matt Berry and Luke Sheather. In the other game Lauren Swan was showing her acrobatic ability early, seemingly not realising that this was only a social competition and that diving full length - while impressive - wasn't really needed. It's only for a tennis glass! Despite this impressive display, somehow she and Stuart Potter managed to give up a 5-1 lead to lose a tiebreaker 7-8. Meanwhile Jenny and Lachie scored an impressive 8-6 win over Matt and Luke. In the second set, Karyn Goode looking remarkably fresh and Stuart Potter managed a good 8-4 win over opponents Leah Trollop and Carmel Lowry with Karyn pulling off some remarkable shots under pressure. Lauren Swan played in her second tie-breaker once again going down in combination with Jenny Leishman against a very solid Steve Harmer and Luke Sheather. Four sets played led to a narrow three game victory to the College of Knowledge over the Inbetweeners and retention of bragging rights at the High School for at least one more week.

A Country Practice (26 games) defeated McSheridans (24 games)
This was likely to prove the toughest fought encounter of the night given the calibre of players on both sides. 'Acky' Adamson wily old campaigner and with years of experience behind him versus John McConville, the terrier that never gives up on chasing down a errant tennis ball. Oleg Rachinsky with a forehand that when it comes off, goes with the speed of a Russian Surface to Air Missile versus Bernard "Brick Wall' Sheridan. Hit the ball at or near Bernie and it just keeps coming back. How you ask? Even Bernie says he doesn't know. He just sticks the racquet in the general vicinity and it sails back over the net. So even before it started the first set of this match was promising to be monumental. And it was monumental with an extremely hard fought game where the Adamson / Rachinsky combination just proved to be a little too strong for the McSheridans winning 8-6. In the second set, the younger McSheridan combination of Alex Sheridan and Will McConville repeated the older generation's effort losing 6-8 to Dimi and ring-in Katie Gillahan. In the second round the father-son combinations of the McSheridans had mixed results with Bernie and Alex winning the McSheridan's only set for the night with an impressive 8-2 win over Acky and Katie Gillahan. John and Will's match against Dimi and Oleg was at first even but Dimi and Oleg managed to draw away for an 8-4 win.

The Powderpuffs (25 games) defeated Wallis (and Gromit) (24 games)
In an obvious play upon their combined surnames Tom Walker christened his team Wallis(and Gromit) and in combination with Michelle Hollis in their first set, looked as equally comfortable with a tennis racquet in his hand as he did with a croquet club mallet later in the night defeating the Powderpuff sisters Stacey Hibberd and Nicole Nunn 8-5. Meanwhile in the other set Kathy Walker and Tom Gillahan had a close fought match with Jodi Constable and Belinda Murray with Jodi and Belinda winning 8-6. In the return bout, Aidan Goode filled in for Nicole Nunn partnering Jodi Constable, but were no match for Kathy Walker and Michelle Hollis who won 8-4, while the Tom-Toms (Tom Gillahan and Tom Walker) were beaten to within an inch of their lives, with Belinda Murray and Stacey Hibberd winning 8-2. This was the closest match of the night, with the Powderpuffs winning by the narrowest of margins.
